Revolutionary Girl Utena: Shoujo Kakumei Utena

Please note that this is a discussion on the anime and the Manga.

Revolutionary Girl Utena was published in 1997 by mangaka Chiho Saito and the creative team of Be Papas. It was the last of the Magical Girl era and signaled a change in the anime/manga industry.

I decided to look into Utena because I had heard that it was different and I needed a distraction from some serious college-induced stress. Continue reading “Revolutionary Girl Utena: Shoujo Kakumei Utena”

Cycles of Duat: The Betrayal of Isis

Cycles of Duat is a new concept series that got started in late 2018. It’s mainly on DeviantArt, and as a result is free to view. I recommend using their wordpress site Cycles of Duat is based on Egyptian Mythology, and as of right now, there’s only one short manga for it. The artist is also preparing to launch a second comic, so it’ll be interesting to see how this goes.

I adore all things ancient Egyptian. It’s a tick I carried over from childhood, and one that’s led me to some pretty awesome (and pretty terrible) series over the years. The Betrayal of Isis was free to read, brand new and ancient Egyptian….

So I thought, “Eh? Why not?”

The Betrayal of Isis is essentially the story of how Isis got Ra off the throne and installed Osiris (and herself) as Pharaoh of the gods. If you know Egyptian mythology, this story isn’t new to you. Continue reading “Cycles of Duat: The Betrayal of Isis”

Aoi Horus no Hitomi: The Blue Eye of Horus

Egyptian fans can rejoice!

A manga centering entirely in Egypt’s Middle Kingdom has arrived!

The Blue Eye of Horus is about Princess Hatshepsut, who is forced to marry her brother, Thutmose II to secure the royal blood-line. The marriage is strictly political and the two butt heads at at every turn. Hatshepsut refuses to be exploited as a weak woman and insists on opening trade routes and creating political openings. Thutmose is more concerned with his harem and warmongering across northern Africa. Continue reading “Aoi Horus no Hitomi: The Blue Eye of Horus”

Módào Zushi 魔道祖师 (manhua review)

3cfe61cf5d808aff8f7420aaf4464e74

Modao Zushi was originally published as a web-novel by Mòxiāng Tóngxiù in October of 2015. It has become a great success, particularly among fans of wuxia style storylines.

The series has been made into a manhua (manga), an animation series, a drama CD collection, and is scheduled to have a live-action production.

This review is ONLY covering the story as is told in the manhua, which differs slightly from the story told in the animation and the original novel. I’m working my way through the animation series as I’m writing this, so expect that review in the future.

From Far Away

From Far Away is a manga that was first published in 1993 by mangaka Kyoko Hikawa.

Despite being over twenty years old, From Far Away is a surprisingly good manga. It shows its age with the older art-style, but I consider it a plus rather an a minus. The softer, beautified style enhances the magic and attraction of the story where cleaner, more realistic art wouldn’t have served.

When I try to decide who I would recommend From Far Away to, I wind up sounding like an infomercial:

“If you like pretty artwork then From Far Away is the manga for you!”

“If you like epic romances then From Far Away is the manga for you!”

“If you like demons and apocalyptic monsters then From Far Away is the manga for you!” Continue reading “From Far Away”

So I’m a Spider, So What?

Now for a manga most people haven’t stumbled across yet.

“So I’m a Spider, So What?” is a newer manga series to the “virtual fantasy” genre, featuring a main character who has been turned, for whatever reason, into a low-level dungeon creep, a spider.

Olympos

Now for another manga review, this round’s star is Olympos, by Aki.

Olympos is  a single-volume novel that I purchased on a whim after a trip to the book-store.

I was drawn to it by (dare I admit it?) the cover-art.

Actually, I was also intrigued by the subject matter, the legend of Prince Ganymede isn’t one that is usually touched on. In the realm of Greek mythology, it’s a boring story and gets left out when an artist delves into the field.

Yokai Rental Shop

My first actual manga review topic is the new manga “Yokai Rental Shop” by Shin Mashiba.

“Yokai Rental Shop” is very straightforward and incredibly easy to pick up. The plot is an average “Boy out for revenge and his companions” plot-line, punctuated by interludes into the lives of the companions. It has some similarities to Black Butler, but if you enjoy magical/ yokai based manga, or like a quick read, this is a good manga to pick up.
